Affirmative Action

Hello again readers,

Today I am going to be talking to you about affirmative action legislation. Basically, affirmative action is a federal agenda that allows underrepresented groups (ethnic minorities, women, etc.) to obtain employment and education that were formerly off limits to them.

Should we get rid of all affirmative action legislation?

Affirmative action was implemented in 1961. It is highly controversial and has changed since first being implemented. As of 2009, most Americans supported affirmative action, but disagreed about minority preference. There are a few things to know about affirmative action before you take a stance.

A student who was denied access to the University of Texas thinks so. Abigail Fisher believes she was denied admission to the University of Texas because she is white. The case was brought to the Supreme Court in 2012 and the case could put limits on affirmative action in universities, or even get rid out it completely.

The are both pros and cons of affirmative action. A big pro is that diversity won't always occur if it is left to chance. A big con is affirmative action sometimes leads to reverse discrimination as in the case above.

Although some people believe that affirmative action is not working it is. A poll from 1990-2006 shows that the amount of degrees that minorities (African American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, and nonresident) have all been increasing.

Whether or not there should be affirmative action legislation is one of the most highly debated topics out there. There have been documented cases of reverse discrimination out there, but also data that shows affirmative action is working. In the end it is up to you to decide if you think there should be a future with or without affirmative action.
